I worked and worked but I wasn’t doing well in lif I worked and worked but I wasn’t doing well in life. Infact I was doing worse. My health got worse and I was spending half the days in bed to the point I was diagnosed with ME/CFS. I couldn’t work for anyone because I couldn’t be on their terms - my symptoms had their own working hours! My dream of having a successful business was dwindling… I realised what my mum said to me wasn’t true. Working hard didn’t do me well in life, I realised I hard to work smarter! 10 years on from then my health is the best it’s been since my teens and I’m working less but what I do now is strategic not just constantly in my business but looking at it holistically where my health comes first. You don’t have to hit rock bottom like I did to know something isn’t working. If you’re running yourself into the ground trying to build your fashion brand trust me, there is a better way. When I had a lingerie brand I made sure to create When I had a lingerie brand I made sure to create beautiful images of my designs. A lot of them I took myself (because I didn’t have the budget for a pro photographer, I also modelled them myself too because they fit me, and of course that was ‘free’. I edited my photos to the T, spending days on choosing the right ones and perfecting each one. I put these on my product listings, website and etsy and thought yes beautiful clear images. My photos did exactly what I needed them to do, they showed off the garments beautifully, they were clear, you could see details, some were modelled and some were flat lays and I’d put so much time and effort in to them. I also put these same images on my instagram account. They were really good photos like who wasn’t going to buy from these. But the thing was, I got lots of likes and comments but the sales didn’t reflect that. I couldn’t understand at the time. But now I do. My photos were doing the job of a high street product catalogue perfectly. The problem was I wasn’t a high street brand. My dream customer wasn’t looking for a catalogue. They were looking for something to connect with, believe in and feel excited about. And beautiful product shots alone can’t do that. That’s where most independent brands get stuck. They focus on making their assets look “good”, instead of making them feel like something.
